In this state, Eleanore's false body takes on an appearance closer to that of her true body.

This includes the spellwork once carved into her own flesh to form her pact with Lachesis. A bastardized amalgamation of archaic runes and complex geometries borne of the arcane union between Mhach and the Void.

This scarification spans across Eleanore's body, save only for her face. Its main components are centralized on her chest, back, and palms. Their margins are surprisingly neat for scars, to the point where a glance at a distance might instead suggest they were designs instead of ink rather than old, raised wounds.

The prolonged exposure of her actual body to Lachesis' deeply Darkness-steeped aether has also resulted in other physical changes.

Perhaps the starkest example of this change is found in her limbs, which appear as if dipped in ink that gradually fades the higher the eye rises. Only the ritual scars interrupt the black, raised and red.

The whites of her eyes become as pitch, against which the crimson of her eyes almost seems set alight with bestial constricted pupils. Around those eyes and across her cheeks and temples rise thin black veins that spiderweb across her skin like cracks in porcelain.

Last, but certainly not least, are her weapons. At the end of Eleanore's fingertips lie wicked talons, ilms long and fine as a sharp blade. Canine teeth likewise elongate into pointed fangs, able to sink into her victims' necks with near surgical precision.. or viciously tear open their throats.

no slave to starvation

It is common knowledge that what often makes Voidsent and those whom have been tainted by their hand so very dangerous is their intense hunger for aether. An ache that can only be sated for a time, but never quelled.

In this, Eleanore is no exception. Just like any other Nightkin, she feels its constant gnawing. Yet her hunger is not her master; rather, it is a beast that stands obediently at her heel.

That hard-earned control was forged by years of exposure, tempered by her strength of will, and reinforced by the boon of her Patron.

While she can ignore its pangs, Eleanore must still feed. Her false body requires regular tithes of living, corporeal aether to maintain itself. If denied, she will grow steadily weaker until her false body fades, leaving the spell to shepherd her soul back to that which claims it.

Despite its monstrousness, this form actually does NOT grant Eleanore any significant boost to her physical strength, speed, nor endurance. She remains physically on par with a normal person of her stature and physical condition.

Without a supernatural physical advantage, she instead hunts by way of ambush. Most targets are stalked for days to learn their habits and routines before the huntress sets her trap, offering herself as bait to lure them out.

Once her quarry makes its move on her, she is quick to turn the tables. Often they do not have time to properly realize their error before Eleanore's claws are opening their bellies and her fangs are ripping into their arteries.

As ruthless as the springing of the trap may be, however, Eleanore isn't one to play with her food. So long as complications do not arise, her hunts are often over as quickly as they began.

Ul'dah is by far the most common place one would encounter Eleanore. It's where she currently lives and works, and it isn't terribly often that she manages to wander much past its walls. However, she does also make somewhat regular trips out into the various settlements of Thanalan, particularly closer ones like Blackbrush Station and the Silver Bazaar.

Some basic ideas of what Eleanore might be up to when encountered in Ul'dah or Thanalan include..

gridania and the black shroud

While she's found here far less frequently than Ul'dah, Eleanore comes from a small, nigh abandoned hamlet by the name of Briar Glen in the far northwestern reaches of the Black Shroud, less than a day's ride from the Coerthan border. As such, she makes trips homes at least a couple of times a year, or when she's called upon by one of the settlements she makes her rounds through during those trips.

Some basic ideas of what Eleanore might be up to when encountered in Gridania or the Shroud include..

In having her soul's connection to the Lifestream blocked, so too has Eleanore's ability to utilize travel by Aetheryte been severed. This adds to her already significant reticence to travel very far from the clinic and the patients who need her, as any such long distances will have to be traveled the old-fashioned way.

Therefore, Eleanore will most likely not be casually found roaming the streets of Radz-at-Han, Kugane, or any other locations beyond the continent of Aldenard.

Again, that isn't to say it's totally impossible! However, this would be reserved for those interactions that are meant to be in more depth, plot-driven, and long term rather than casual chats at the bar.

Eleanore spends most of her days hard at work offering medical services to Ul'dah's residents and visitors. She owns Portelaine Clinic, located in the fringes of the city proper in a working class part of town.

Over the handful of years her clinic has been in operation, it's developed a reputation amongst the locals as the place to go when one is needing help when their pockets are light. Patients are only ever charged as much as they can spare; for many, that's nothing at all.

Many of the city's elite and other, more profit motivated healers and alchemists might look upon the clinic and its charitable owner with condescension, contempt, or suspicion; however, for those whom it was built to serve, it brings comfort and healing to those whom the coin-driven city often leaves behind.

Unfortunately, Eleanore has yet to find one of those fabled trees upon which money sprouts. Which is truly a shame, considering that a charitable clinic of her own's size and scale tends to generate a great deal of expenses while bringing in very little coin.

While she has certain.. other means of bringing in revenue, Elle does make an honest attempt at keeping as much of her business above-board as possible. To that end, she's no stranger to meeting with the city's affluent and influential to plead her case for donations of coin or goods.

However, in a city where profit is religion, it's often hard to find honest merchants, artisans, and nobles willing to open their purses for nothing in exchange beyond warm, fuzzy feelings.

As such, Eleanore sometimes turns to more unsavory business concerns and operations when coin is too tight for comfort. These benefactors, at least, she can offer something in return..

In most situations in which one would happen upon Eleanore, they'll find her disposition sunny and sweet as sugar. However, whenever it comes to someone vulnerable being harmed or otherwise preyed upon by another, that's when her claws come out.

Figuratively speaking, anyway. At least during the daytime.

She might be the least physically threatening force to ever descend upon the brutes and bullies of Ul'dah, but she has a sharpness of tongue and coldness of manner when doing so that oftentimes catches them off guard - or at least shifts their ire onto herself instead of their would-be victim. Her inability to stand by idly has gotten her into trouble no few times; however, she's never regretted doing the right thing.

It isn't merely street thugs that might find her in their faces, however. Treating many of the city's lowest class, she's often told of abuses suffered at the hands of employers, lenders, traders, even Brass Blades..

The worst of such offenders might find themselves being visited by night; however, those whose offenses don't rise to quite such a level often instead find her angrily knocking on their doors come morning to talk improved working conditions, negotiation of more reasonable terms, or the lifting of false charges.

Making ends meet when you're not charging the lion's share of your clientele can be tricky. However, Eleanore has adopted a less-than-legal secondary stream of revenue to help offset the hemorrhaging.

Of an evening, Portelaine Clinic serves a different kind of clientele: criminals. Mostly, she tries to limit these clients to non-violent offenders.. or minimally violent, at least. Yet not always does she get much of a say in the matter. When a murderous madman shows up at your door demanding to be stitched up, only a madwoman with a death wish turns them away.

Regardless, Elle's sweet, kindly bedside manner is saved only for her daytime clients. Those who come by night see a much more shrewd, sharp-tongued chirurgeon. So, too, is any modicum of charity gone. They'll be receiving a bill; a handsome one at that, though not unreasonable given her exceptional surgical skill and proven track record for discretion.

There is always danger inherent in serving such a vicious lot, though. Doubly so when those in her care are often under some sort of influence, used to getting their way, and in severe pain. Yet the doctor doesn't scare easily. She'll let them seethe and spit curses and threaten her while holding a cold, intense, if not eerie silence. Then, she will calmly remind them:

She didn't cultivate her reputation by merely treating pickpockets and burglars.. and those clients don't appreciate when their pocket surgeon is threatened.

Is it a bluff? Maybe, maybe not.. But often times, the threat mixed with that frigid, unwavering glare is enough to get them to reconsider making any hasty, foolish decisions.

To that end, information brokers might see Eleanore with some frequency. It might raise some eyebrows, to have the kindly doctor asking after details of any particularly violent crimes taking place. Yet she always insists that her asking is at a client's request and, as such, she's not at liberty to share any details..

For an upstanding, much-beloved doctor by day, there are certainly a lot of different folks who might take a particular interest in her comings and goings.

Perhaps most obviously is her clandestine chirurgical practice. Though she goes to great pains to keep it as discreet as possible, mistakes happen. Sometimes someone's just at the right place at the wrong time.From there, questions can add up quickly.

It's no big secret, of course, that Eleanore infrequently charges her clients. That she's managed to stay afloat - and even grow - her clinic has confounded no few seasoned businessmen. There are rumors, naturally, but surely not.. The doctor is kind and only wishes to help, so it'd make no sense.. would it?

There's also her curious curiosities. When you pursue as many sordid lines of inquiry as Eleanore does, it's only a matter of time before your secrets get sold.. perhaps even to the very one she's been asking about, or to someone simply trying to make sense of her financial oliphant in the room.

Lastly, but certainly not least, would be the inexplicable disappearances that happen every few months with some semblance of regularity. The missing, though, are those whose absence is more likely to be a relief than mourned. Those for whom a lifetime in the gaols would simply be too lenient a punishment.

Curiously, though, no one's ever found a body.. but occasionally, someone does stumble into a back alley to find a truly horrific amount of blood spilled by someone - no, something - long since gone.

Once again, the time comes for Eleanore to secure herself a feast of aether to rejuvenate that spellwork which binds her displaced soul to false body.

Her hunts are not hasty affairs, however. Hunting purely by ambush, being rushed to act often only leads to a bloody failure and empty belly. Rather, Eleanore has often pursued her would-be prey for weeks, if not months before she ever makes a move.

First, she has to be certain that theirs is a soul irredeemable. Only upon confirmation does she then study them more closely. Their habits and routines, where they travel and their favored routes, who accompanies them, and - most importantly - what is most likely to tempt them into taking her bait..

At last, once all is in place, the nightstalker will set her trap and place herself as bait.

Ideally, the perfect hunt is over within seconds. She wheels on her quarry in a flurry of claw and fang meant to inflict as much trauma as quickly as possible. Once she's devoured every last drop of corporeal aether, naught of the body is left but ash and blood. But the huntress is long gone before any unfortunate drunkard stumbles into the scene.

Of course, no ambush predator is ever 100% successful. No amount of careful planning can account for the unaccountable. A change in routine, an unexpected onlooker, even prey that has become aware of its hunter and has set a trap of their own..

Eleanore is not the only one who stalks the night in search of monsters to slay. Unfortunately for her, though, these hunters are after her - or at least, others like and akin to her.

Voidsent hunters are, naturally, of great concern to Eleanore. She will go out of her way to avoid them if at all possible and redirect them off her trail when it isn't. The most intrepid inquirers whom cannot be shaken are instead watched closely and carefully questioned in kind.

If it's oath or duty that guides their blades, they might be more amenable to an appeal to their humanity. Those who are fueled by anger and revenge are much more difficult to convince.. and dangerous. Elle perhaps understands better than most how seductive rage fueled by pain can be and the horrid things it tempts a person to do in its name.

However, those who are open to giving her a chance to prove her good intentions will find in Eleanore an excellent ally. It's never a bad idea to have a skilled doctor in one's pocket when fighting against aether-hungry interlopers. Doubly so when said healer controls access to a magically warded manor in the Shroud filled to the brim with books and artifacts related to the Void and Mhach.

And if they sufficiently earn her trust in turn..? She might eventually be willing to introduce said Voidhunter to her Patron - a Voidsent even more peculiar of nature than their Nightkin protégé.

Voidsent and those touched by their influence are not wont to seek out the company of their fellows purely out of brotherly sentiment. No, often times such interaction is driven by something one party or the other wants.

In this, perhaps, Eleanore is not wholly dissimilar. She doesn't go out of her way to seek those originating from or touched by the Void's corrupting influence. So too would be be deeply mistrustful of any that seek her out in kind, having been given no few warnings by Lachesis of their kind's penchant for duplicity and carefully crafted deceits.

However, it's difficult for Eleanore to deny her true nature: curiosity. If an opportunity arose to meet and learn about those in similar situations to her own, she would find it nigh impossible to walk away like she knows she probably should..

It isn't only Voidhunters that might take a keen interest in a Nightkin, though.. and because of her own sordid past experiences, Elle is far more wary of those that court the monsters rather than hunt them.

They go by many different titles: mages and occultists, scholars and researchers, voidmages.So too are their origins and motivations similarly diverse. However, one thing they all have in common with their fellows? They all will have Eleanore's immediate mistrust.

Perhaps if they seem otherwise well-meaning, she might attempt an earnest plea for them to reconsider the ever-corrupting path they walk down and warn them of that only horrors lie at its end.

This is, far and away, the most rare and difficult hook to utilize to start an RP.. but with a compelling and sensible premise or with enough time and effort made by your character to convince Eleanore, it's possible - and very intriguing a prospect!

As guarded as Eleanore is with her own nature, she's even more protective of any and all information related to her Patron, Lachesis. However, there may be certain circumstances where making introductions to the one whom saved her and freed her are required or unavoidable.

However, there is a possibility that one could encounter Lachesis ere ever meeting Eleanore. Up until very recently, the Voidsent called the extensive Gelmorran ruins beneath Portelaine Manor their home. To guard against the dangerous secrets and artifacts within the manor's bloody halls, the duty they chose to take in their ward's newfound freedom.

Perhaps they stumble upon Lachesis while raiding the long-abandoned ruins for plunder, or they are a curious soul that knows the strong arcane wards around the old Manor are but glowing signs announcing that something exciting and valuable must lie behind those doors.. they're likely in for a surprise.

Generally speaking, this hook is a great way to set up a long term, recurring interaction or plotline between Eleanore and a character she might otherwise avoid.

She could potentially be either the blackmailed and blackmailer. For her part, her dealings with less than legal clientele and the associated laundering of their ill-gained coin would be quite persuasive. Of course, so too would be someone who discovers her more occult secrets.

Though likely a rarer scenario, she might hold something over your character's head to get something that she needs. Coin and goods to funnel into her clinic is an obvious choice, but she wouldn't be above using blackmail to coerce someone who preys upon the destitute to change their tune.

Additionally, the blackmail route also serves as a way to navigate around a situation where Eleanore might otherwise be driven to pursue a character with intent to hunt. Having something like evidence of her nature being held over her head will likely go quite a long way to convince her to back down. Perhaps even more compelling would be a threat of harm befalling her beloved patients.

But that blade can also cut both ways.

If Elle hunts someone, she typically does not do so until she collects evidence meant to confirm their guilt beyond reasonable doubt. (In her own eyes, at least.) If she were to have something equally damning to hold over your character's head in turn, it could mean a dynamic where both sides have a figurative blade held to the other's throat.. just waiting to see who flinches first.

Perhaps her most unusual of all her unusual traits, Eleanore has the queer habit of not staying dead.

She's already experienced death a few times, mostly in her earlier days before she quite got the grasp of how to hunt properly. Even if not permanent, it's still a deeply unpleasant experience.. and one that she tries to avoid as much as possible. It also takes a great deal of time - and a prodigious amount of blood and aether - for Lachesis to weave the magicks to restore her false body.

The circumstances leading to this hook could vary widely. It could be the unfortunate consequences of a hunt gone wrong. Maybe she didn't quite convince that Voidhunter that she was worthy of being spared, or succeed in getting the Voidmage to renounce their pursuits. It could be as fantastical as another Voidsent thinking to make her a meal, only to be deeply disappointed to find her soul already spoken for. It could be as mundane as one of her criminal patients disliking her sharp tongue and calling her bluff.

Whatever the circumstance of her death might be, she will be back... and she holds grudges really well.

This isn't so much a hook as what I feel is an important OOC aside regarding dark/heavy themes that are a large part of Elle's character and how I prefer to approach them in writing.

Some of my favorite themes to write have always been the human capacity for resiliency and hope, rising above trauma, reclaiming one's agency and power, and healing. So, when I write dark and heavy themes, these are the lenses that I'm looking to write them through.

Elle was created in response to a lot of the anger and powerlessness I was feeling over real world affairs at that time. She was very much intended to be an outlet for me to work through those feelings creatively. Though she has since taken on life of her own beyond just "eat the bad guys," the real world and the people running it are still atrocious.. and I still have a lot of big feelings.

So, all that said, there is very little in terms of dark and heavy themes that I am personally averse to inclusion in a narrative.

The only caveats that I have are that I expect the following from anyone I write these themes with:

It seems like everyone these days has something weird, wacky, and wonderful going on with their aetheric signatures.. and Eleanore is no exception!

Jests aside, this is not meant to be a full hook itself that just leads to curious idle chit-chat. Rather, it's meant more as a stepping stone into a hook with more meat on its bones.

Those with some means of sensing others' aether might pick up that Eleanore's is not quite normal. It's seems to be something of a contradiction - but with the opposing sides in peaceful harmony with one another. Dark and Light, balance, with neither seeming to vie for dominance over the other.

Notably though, it most likely wouldn't jump right out to someone as being identifiably "Void-touched" in nature with its stability and harmony. At least, it wouldn't be obvious to any who aren't so experienced with and equipped for detecting even the faintest telltale touch of the Void. For such characters as Voidhunters, Voidmages, and other Voidsent and Void-touched, they might well recognize it.

What the everyday aetherologist might find more intriguing than its dual-but-not-dueling aspects is the way in which it functions. Normally, one's aether ebbs and flows through the day, expended through their activities and recovered through rest and repast.

However, Elle's only ever seems to be ever-so-slowly draining, like a tiny crack that is leaking water from a bucket. From moment to moment, it may be difficult to notice. From day to day and week to week, however, it becomes much more obvious. Likewise, there are times when it seems to have dwindled so low that one would be forgiven for thinking she was a ghost.

Yet the most curious of all is when she shows up not long after that with her aether brimming to full and practically glowing.. alongside the returned pep to her step and sanguine disposition.

There is little that Eleanore loves to do more in her free time than read. To say that she devours books like a woman starved would be an understatement. She flies through them like a woman possessed, and is right back at the shelves for another as soon as she finishes the last word.

Romances are by far her favorite genre to partake in.. the spicier and more rife with cliches and overdone tropes, the better! Tales of adventure and heroes with grand destinies are a close second, though.

However, that isn't to say she won't venture past her favorite genres. She'll gladly pick up anything that catches her eyes from medical reports and studies, world histories, encyclopedias.. No book is safe from her greedy little book gremlin hands.

If your character is a bookseller, fellow reader, or perhaps even an author, she will talk their ears off.

I'm a goofy chaos gremlin in my thirties, of which more than 20 of those have been spent RPing in some form or fashion. I cut my teeth on MSN Messenger and chatroom RP, moved onto forums like Gaia Online, and then finally made the hop to FFXIV RP back around Patch 2.2!

I've always loved writing, especially when done collaboratively! As many stories as I have in me to tell, none have ever been more fulfilling than those I've written with others over the years.

As harsh as I might come off at times in my rules, I am but a goofy goober who likes to play fantasy Barbie dolls with her friends.

To that point, I am an absolute weenie with RSD. I'm working on it, but most times, the thought of sending that first /tell alone is enough to make my heart pound and my stomach feel like it's turning inside out. :')

So, more often than not, I just let RP come to me.. while I stare longingly at all the OCs that I'd love to write with someday.
